Suzume Iwato is a 17-year-old girl who lives with her aunt in a quiet town in the Kyushu region of Japan. One day, while she is on her way to school, she meets a young man searching for an abandoned area with a door. Suzume tells him about an abandoned onsen resort nearby, and follows him curiously. There, she finds a door standing alone on its frame. Suzume opens the door and is amazed to see a starlit field inside, which she can’t enter. She then trips over a cat statue on the floor, which turns into a real cat and flees. Frightened, she rushes back to her school. Later that day, Suzume returns to the abandoned onsen resort and finds that the door has disappeared. However, she soon realizes that the door has not disappeared at all. Instead, it has been transported to another location. Suzume begins to have visions of other doors, and she realizes that these doors are portals to other dimensions. These doors are also releasing disasters all over Japan. Suzume teams up with the young man she met earlier, Souta Munakata, to close these doors and prevent the disasters from happening. Their journey takes them all over Japan, and they encounter many challenges along the way. But through it all, Suzume learns the importance of closing doors, both literal and metaphorical. The movie is directed by Makoto Shinkai, who is known for his previous animated films such as Your Name and Weathering with You.
